The Joy of a daughter’s success! They say a mother is only ever as happy as her least happy child. I hate how true this is but today is a good day! As a rising sophomore, Danielle just made her high school dance team. The same team she didn’t make as an incoming freshman last year. The same team her best friend did make as a incoming freshman last year. Oh the exhilaration of winning after experiencing the soul crush of defeat and having to live with it for a year. Of course this joy will not stick, for either of us. It is just passing through and will move on, just as all of our other life experiences and emotions, big and small, do. The brain-science says it’s because humans continually need new mountains to climb and new highs to chase, never satisfied with what is but always reaching for more. And so an individual life is a string of experiences, from tiny to gigantic; a string of challenges, goals and desires; a string of wins and defeats. How Exciting, and Beautiful: knowing that there is always more. That there will always be new surprises around every corner. However, in THIS moment, I’m going to sit with my cup of tea and bathe in the Joy that exist today and savor it while it lasts. The simple Joy that, today, my daughter is happy.
